“ Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people. Unfortunately, that’s too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. The broader one’s understanding of the human experience, the better design we will have.

Above is an outtake shot of an image, which I did finish. It was the date of November 11, 2011 and I wanted to have fun and to remember it somehow. So I spent the evening trying to make this:
I must have taken about 20 separate shots of it. Each took about 5-10 minutes to create. Each time, I changed things up. After about 6 hours of playing with lights, I finally made the picture I had in mind. Then, at 11:11 p.m., I made a wish and posted it.

This is an outtake of an image I tried to create several weeks ago. Things kept going wrong so I never got to finish it.
My flashlight has a setting that has it go through a spectrum of colors, but that night, the battery was too low to activate some of the moving gels inside. I didn’t have extra batteries on hand so I ended up with a loop of just orange and green lights.
Also, it was super windy and I was standing on a long platform thingy that’s about 4-5 feet wide in the middle of a pond. I walked back and forth in front of my camera, trying to make a swirly perspective effect, while also trying not to get blown off into the water by the wind. At least, there wasn’t anyone around to see my flash light tai chi fiasco!
